Mission Statement

At Dragon Wrestling Club, we are dedicated to developing extraordinary wrestlers, coaches, and leaders who elevate the community around them. Through comprehensive, high-level training, we empower high school, collegiate, and senior athletes to unlock their peak physical, mental, and personal performance. Whether refining technical mastery, executing advanced match strategy, or giving back off the mat, Dragon WC gives driven competitors the edge they need to succeed at the highest levels and make a lasting impact.

About Dragon Wrestling Club

Founded in 2018 by Drexel University coaches, alumni, and key program stakeholders, Dragon Wrestling Club was established to deliver elite training and holistic support to wrestlers and coaches across the Philadelphia region.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Dragon WC is proudly recognized and sanctioned by USA Wrestling to be an official Olympic Regional Training Center (RTC). We provide a collaborative, high-caliber environment where qualified high school, collegiate, and senior-level athletes train together year-round while supporting the mission of USA Wrestling. Beyond our core RTC practices and seasonal training camps, Dragon WC is dedicated to growing the sport at every level, offering developmental camps and specialized clinics for elementary, middle school, and high school wrestlers throughout the region.

Dragon Wrestling Club is an official USA Wrestling Olympic Regional Training Center. Our coaches are USAW high level leadership trained.

Matt Azevedo

Matt Azevedo

Head Coach

Matt Azevedo has served as the head coach of Drexel University's wrestling program since April 2011, revitalizing the program, leading the Dragons to an EIWA Independence Division championship, and earning EIWA Coach of the Year honors. Before his tenure at Drexel, and prior assistant coaching roles at Cornell and Cal Poly, he was a three-time NCAA qualifier at Arizona State and Iowa State, as well as a 2020 California Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee. As an elite senior freestyle wrestler, Azevedo was a U.S. Open National Champion, a two-time U.S. National Team member, a 2007 World Team alternate, and a top-four finisher at both the 2004 and 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Mauro Correnti

Assistant Coach

Mauro Correnti joined the Drexel University wrestling program as an assistant coach in October 2023, primarily working with the team's upper weight classes. Prior to his time at Drexel, the Delran, New Jersey native served as an assistant coach for two seasons at Hofstra University, where he helped guide three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. As a collegiate athlete, Correnti competed as a heavyweight at Rider University, accumulating 61 career victories, placing third twice at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships, and earning an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Division I Tournament. Additionally, he trained as a flex-athlete with the Pennsylvania Regional Training Center from 2018-2021 while competing on the senior freestyle circuit.

Assistant Coach

Chad Walsh joined Drexel University as an assistant wrestling coach in August 2024 after previous coaching stints at Columbia, Davidson, and Rider. Before transitioning to coaching, the Cherry Hill, New Jersey native was a standout athlete at Rider University, where he was a two-time NCAA All-American, a three-time Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champion, and the Broncs' all-time leader in wins by fall. During his two seasons as an assistant at Columbia prior to coming to Drexel, he helped guide ten NCAA qualifiers, two EIWA champions, and an All-American while assisting the Lions to consecutive top-four EIWA Tournament finishes. He holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's in athletic leadership from Rider, where he was also a four-time Academic All-American.
